Operation: Pretenders Hide, the Cosplayer inside
We are pleased to announce that applications to take part in the TFNation 2018 Cosplay Competition are now open!
All Cosplay Contest contestants must register their interest online before TFNation 2018. We will not be accepting additional entrants during the convention itself.
Space in the contest is limited so all applications are subject to approval prior to the event. Completing the application form does not mean that your application has been approved. TFNation crew will approve applicants until all spaces have been filled.
The Cosplay Contest will be split into two categories: Mech and Human.
- Mech Cosplay: Includes full and partial rig costumes, which replicate the appearance of robot characters from Transformers.
- Human Cosplay: Includes human characters from Transformers, such as Verity Carlo and Spike Witwicky, holomatter designs such as those seen in the IDW comics, and humanised interpretations of Transformers robot characters.
There will be two sets of first, second and third place winners - one set from the Mech category and one set from the Human category.
The Cosplay Contest will have three segments; pre-judging, then the parade, followed by the announcement of placings and prizes by the judging panel.
Pre-judging is presently scheduled to take place at 5:00pm in the Kings Suite (Club Con), before the room opens to attendees at 6:pm. Please note: these timings are subject to our final schedule of events and therefore may change - don't worry, we will make an announcement if necessary.
The judging panel will be chosen in advance by TFNation. The judges will choose the winners based on the following criteria:
- Accuracy of design
- Creativity of design (for humanised designs)
- Craftsmanship
- Execution
- Performance
Original characters may not be entered into the competition. While we love the creativity which goes into these costumes, it can prove very difficult to fairly judge them alongside established characters - thank you for your understanding.
The costume you wear should be your own creation. If you wish to enter a costume that will be worn by someone other than its maker, please contact the TFNation Crew in advance.
We encourage the majority of your costume to be a handmade, original creation. Found or modified items and garments are also permitted. Some minor shop-purchased items (such as Optimus Prime helmets) may be allowed at the judges' discretion.
All weapons must be toys or handmade. No sharp weapons or replica weapons are permitted. No functioning projectile weapons, such as loaded Nerf guns or water pistols, are permitted.
TFNation reserves the right to inspect all props and weapons for safety. If an entrant declines to have their items inspected when asked, they will be required to leave the area.
We ask Cosplayers to consider members of the public, hotel staff, and other hotel guests when transporting weapons to and from the competition, and to not display weapons or props in a manner that may cause unnecessary alarm.
We would like to remind Cosplayers that there will be minors present in the hall for the competition, and ask you to keep your costume audience-appropriate.
Entrants under the age of 16 must have a parent or guardian in the hall while they are competing.
TFNation Crew are not eligible to enter the competition. Crew members may still dress up should they wish, and may join the parade, but will be exempt from judging and ineligible for prizes. This applies to dedicated TFNation Crew only – TFNation volunteers are more than welcome to enter the competition.
